Our mission
DataOwn helps organisations bring their data together and turn it into useful insights. We want you to understand what happens to your data and build on your own models and dashboards. Even without a large data team.
For us, that control starts with how we organise our own company. DataOwn has been steward-owned since its foundation. We designed our ownership structure from the outset to keep our mission and our customers’ interests at the centre of our decisions.
At DataOwn, voting rights and economic interests are separated. Stewards take responsibility for the company’s direction and safeguard its mission. This keeps the purpose for which DataOwn was founded at the heart of our decisions.
A foundation (KvK 42022719) owns the private limited company (KvK 42023182). By March 2028 at the latest, the foundation will be governed by independent board members with no economic stake in DataOwn. Investors and founders can receive reasonable compensation for their investment and work when profits are made; the mission and customers remain the priority. Steward-ownership is DataOwn’s starting point. The further appointment of an independent foundation board builds on the structure with which we were founded.
Our direction is safeguarded by people who take responsibility for DataOwn and its purpose. Voting rights are not for sale. This gives us room to make decisions based on what customers and the platform need in the long term.
A financially healthy company can keep investing in development, support and continuity. Profit serves that purpose, with room for reasonable compensation for work and investments. This is how entrepreneurship supports the mission.
DataOwn cannot be taken over: our voting rights are not for sale. This also prevents American companies and big tech from gaining control of DataOwn through an acquisition. Our mission and your interest in staying in control of your data remain central.

We build on open-source tools and widely used standards such as SQL. You can take your data, logic and dashboards with you and host the underlying tools yourself. That freedom reflects our belief that you should stay in control of your data.
